Creative, engaging and interactive programs are the primary vehicle through which NSBE-HAE fulfills its mission of creating engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. We provide a variety of programs in the following core areas to support all demographics impacted by the Society: College Initiative, Membership, Pre-College Initiative, Professional Development, Technical Excellence and Community Impact.
College Initiative
Our College Initiative programs help to enhance various skill sets of students in preparation of entering the professional workforce
- NSBE-HAE Scholarships
NSBE-HAE has organized a competitive scholarship competition for the past 10 years giving approximately $35,000 in direct support to Houston area high schools, colleges, and graduate students. In April 2007, NSBE-HAE will host its 11th annual Awards Banquet to recognize outstanding students for their scholarship achievements and successes.
- Job Searching Strategies
This workshop helps prepare students in their job searching efforts. A variety of topics including trends, search strategies and facts about job searching will be covered. In addition, students will learn the three crucial skills of resume development, networking, and interviewing.
Membership
A vital part of our organization is to provide a place for our new and current members to fellowship with each other and build the synergies needed in order for us to achieve our mission.
- Membership Recruitment Drive
The Membership Drive is our 1st program of the year. This event is a relaxed fun-filled event where new members learn more about our organization and are encouraged to join.
- Networking Events
We host several networking/social events that allow our members to network with other Houston-area professionals.
- General Body Meetings
NSBE – HAE meets once a month (10/yr). The scope of the meetings consists of the chapter’s monthly business, corporate speakers, and presentations. The meetings serve as a source of information for the members and as a mechanism for professional enhancement. *NSBE -HAE is looking for corporate speakers to give presentations at our meetings.
Pre College Initiative
The PCI program is one of the most important programs that NSBE-HAE is involved in. The purpose of PCI is to encourage minority youth to attend college and to open their eyes to engineering, math, and science related fields. The following programs are in need of corporate support and involvement.
- Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a full day of interactive workshops that cover a variety of disciplines in the science and technology fields. The program is designed to motivate students to set academic goals in math, science and computer literacy while also providing a unique opportunity to network with professional role models.
- SAT/ACT Tutoring/TMAL Prep This workshop is designed to help prepare students for the ACT and SAT exams. Students will get a refresher on verbal/math topics and learn test-taking techniques that will help to relieve test-taking anxiety.
Professional Development
- Professional Development Conference Series 1&2 This year NSBE-HAE will host its 1st Professional Development Conference Series 1 & 2. These one day conferences allow our members to network with other Houston area professionals and learn various skills that will help them in their career and personal lives. The series cover the areas of Financial Management, Career Development Planning, Entrepreneurship, Graduate School, Technical Writing, Job Security and Giving effective Presentations.
Technical Excellence
This year we have enhanced the Special Interest Groups to serve as the NSBE Technical Excellence Signature Program. We currently offer four SIGs to the NSBE-AE membership:
- Bioengineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Information Technology
- Space
- Energy
These SIGs are tasked to push the boundaries of technology and pursue cutting edge research, design, and analysis within their respective fields of expertise. While in the past, SIGs used to focus on developing roundtable discussions for National Convention, that is no longer a primary attribute of SIGs. Instead, NSBE SIGs are now technological task forces, chartered to develop engineering and scientific products of relevance to this nation, the world, and our community. Given the back to back occurrences of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, we have further tasked all SIGs to execute at least one technical activity this year related to hurricanes or disaster preparation/response.
Community Impact
Community service is one of our primary objectives. NSBE-HAE has continued to be active in the community over the years. Some of our Community Service projects for the upcoming year include, UNCF Walk-A-Thon, Trick-or-Treat for canned goods, Adopt–A-Family for Thanksgiving/Christmas and community events.
- A Walk-For-Education (AWFE)
The goal of AWFE is to increase awareness of the opportunities in colleges among African American communities. Our members walk door–to–door distributing information about college admissions, GED, SAT/ACT, NSBE Resources and financial aid.
- Family Day In the spring, NSBE-HAE has a community picnic for families to enjoy a day of fun, food, and games.
